Do you believe in ghosts? What about spirits or guardian angels? There are invisible forces in this universe we cannot comprehend. They affect our lives in unseen ways, altering your luck, good fortune, or answering your prayers. If you look at it from an enlightened view, we too are spirits. Just that we are a spiritual soul in a material body. We are the most powerful kind of spirit because the body allows us to directly affect and make changes to the world around us. In death, we return to the spiritual form from whence we came. So there is nothing to fear. This life is a rare gift that you can only enjoy for a brief period of time. But there will be another, and another, and another….

SPIRITS – The World We Cannot See

Do you believe in fate? Is there destiny? Is life predetermined or do you have total power to do what you want? Many people who are atheist (non-religious) will tell you there is no fate, no destiny, and no ghosts. I used to believe that too… But nowadays, I can no longer deny the existence of some higher power or spiritual intelligence that oversees us.

I believe spirits are everywhere, around us, right here, right now. There are many types of spirits. The best ones for us are our Guardian Spirits. They are the ones who protect us and bless us with good fortune. Wherever you go, they will follow. Sometimes even nudging you to notice something that could be useful, or that you need.

Spirits can transfer from person-to-person. Mostly by touch. When a priest blesses you, they touch your forehead and say a prayer. When the Dalai Lama blesses a visitor, he holds their heads in his hands and touches his forehead to theirs. If a friend gives you a pat on the back, and suddenly you feel good, perhaps a noble spirit has joined you.

We must always watch out for places or people where evil spirits live. By evil, I don’t only mean those who kill or hurt. It also includes those lustful spirits or depressive spirits who roam the earth looking for hosts through which they can live their desires. For example, a man visits a red-light district. There, he engages prostitutes and walks the alleys. Now, a red-light area is spiritually unclean. Many lustful spirits already roam the area or are attached to the host persons there. When the man beds the prostitute, the physical contact allows the transfer of spirits between himself and the prostitute. Even when the man leaves the red-light district, the lustful spirit is with him. It clings to him. He is now its new host.

Spirits can influence our thoughts, causing you to think in certain ways. And because of the way you are thinking, you will take action on those thoughts. And thus your results. The man infected with the lustful spirit, will keep having the urge to return to the red-light district and go places where he can find satisfaction. It will play with his mind, showing images, sounds, and feelings of sexual pleasure. A person infected with the Yin Devil of Lust, has a purple aura between the eyebrows and around the eyes. The under eyes will also show dark eye bags due to sexual depletion and the loss of Yang energy.

Have you ever wondered why you exist – in this lifetime, under these circumstances? Why were you born into this family and not another? Is there a greater purpose to your life? The answers lie in understanding your soul’s role in living this life and many others.

What is the Soul?

There are a few meanings for the word Soul, but we are focusing on that part of you called your higher consciousness or your spirit, the celestial energy that imbues your body and gives you unique desires and a destiny.

Destiny comes from the Middle English word, destine, which means to determine beforehand. It implies that there is a specific destination intended – a purpose, if you will. Your soul inhabits this body because there are lessons it must learn in this lifetime in order for it to evolve to the next level on the Scale of Souls. If it fails to achieve the learning within this lifetime, the lesson will continue in the next lifetime and in every subsequent life until the Soul has learnt its lesson.

The Soul’s Purpose

The Soul’s ultimate purpose is to return to God and become part of the whole – the one unified consciousness from which everything came. But before it can do so, it must pass through a series of lessons because it has forgotten who or what it truly is. As a soul passes through more lifetimes and experiences, it matures and begins to understand itself and develops the qualities that are necessary for it to rejoin the whole.

Why It All Began

Now you may begin to ask the question, “Why is there a need for such a dynamic system of evolving souls to their highest level? Why does it exist?” To answer this, I am going to tell you a story. A story about how the universe began…

Billions of years ago, there lived only one being – God. He had no form or shape; no components and no parts. He was all there is; there was nothing else. No space, no stars, no planets… nothing. He felt himself to have great potential, but did not know how or in what way. There was nothing he could compare himself to, there was no relativity. For how would one know that they were pretty if there were no ugly? How would one know what is short if there were no tall? All knowledge is relative – it has to be considered in comparison with something else – without relativity, there can be no true knowing.

So God decided that since there was nothing to compare himself to on the outside, he would split himself up and see what is on the inside. His goal was self-discovery; to know himself. And thus occurred what we theorize today to be The Big Bang: infinite mass and density exploding across all directions, creating space and the known universe. As the mass scattered, so did the Soul of God. You are part of that mass, and therefore part of God’s Soul.

Who You Really Are

You are more a soul than a body. You have lived more lives than just this one. And there will be many more to come. Your life is riddled with lessons, major and minor. They come in the form of obstacles and challenges. Sometimes you will swiftly overcome them. At other times, suffering will be your greatest teacher. Whether you overcome an obstacle or suffer because of it, the ultimate purpose is growth and learning. Once you have mastered the lesson, the obstacle is no longer necessary and will disappear.

Why You Are Here

You are here to experience the creation of self. That is, to freely choose who and what you want to be, and then to experience that vividly through your senses, so that you may truly know it in your soul.

Life gives us the opportunity to create whatever we wish, limited only by the natural laws of the universe. You can create pain and suffering; you can create joy and elation. Both help you to experience your whole self, in its entire multi-faceted, multi-dimensional nature. Good and Bad, Right and Wrong. What’s more important is which do you want to experience more of? Which do you seek to create in this lifetime to facilitate your soul’s understanding of itself? This free choice, this ability to create, is the answer to the age old question: What is the purpose of life?

And you know the answer is… “You choose it for yourself.”

Journey to Become One

Your soul is on a journey to become one with God. But there is a problem, just like when you shatter a gigantic fishbowl into a million pieces… no piece comes out exactly the same. Each soul has become a uniquely shaped piece of a gigantic puzzle, with its own exact place and location. To attempt to ‘glue’ back the pieces would be an incredibly arduous task, but there is a better way. Reshape each individual piece into a standard shape that forms a basic building block for the fishbowl (like Lego blocks). Use these building blocks to construct the fishbowl whenever a piece is finished being reshaped. The exact position does not matter any more, each piece has developed the qualities for it to join and be one with the whole.

You are like that little piece of glass, being reshaped and polished by the infinitely patient universe. It could take a few centuries or it might take a few millennia. The cultivation of spirit requires your mind to be centered and steady, giving you the inner harmony and patience to connect with God.

We have talked about improving happiness by developing a robust network of friends. I hope some of you have put the thought into action and are beginning to see results. Some members report a marked improvement in their mood just by spending a day out with friends on a field trip. Sounds good? Then you should do more of it.

Let’s talk a little bit about having a philosophy for life because I realize that many of us do not see a higher purpose for our lives or a reason for being. And this must be conceived before we can find meaning in living.

Spirituality
I will divide the world for you into the religious and the non-religious. Some youths today think religion is ‘stuffy’, ‘old-hat’, and for the ‘weak-minded’. In fact, you’ll see how a guest religious speaker can get intellectually trashed at a university conference made up of highly educated non-believers or agnostics. However, on the whole, the people with religious beliefs have a happier state of mind than non-believers. This is because they have metaphysical answers to questions science alone cannot answer. They see a bigger picture to life and being.

I don’t know what your religion is, and maybe you are agnostic. But I believe there is some hidden force at work in our Universe; some higher intelligence. There are Leaders of this Universal Intelligence: God, Yahweh, Allah, Buddha, Shiva, Zeus, Neptune, Poseidon; Odin, Thor, Freyja; Osiris, Isis, Horus, Hathor and others. I’m not going to debate on who has the truest religion because this has been done many times before. I am a Buddhist by religion and I believe in the philosophy of Buddhism – the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha – the Triple Gems. But I won’t say this is the truest religion because there is no way we can scientifically validate this claim. All religions are based on faith. And thus it takes a leap of faith to make it real for you. Follow your heart, read the literature, and choose what you want to believe in.

A Reason for Living
I believe everyone is born onto this Earth with some role to play. Their life is set up so that they will experience challenges and difficulties which they have the opportunity to overcome or fail. If you can master the lessons in this lifetime, you will progress to new challenges and lessons in the next lifetime. Here I am making an assumption of a Death and Rebirth Cycle – our soul is reborn over many lifetimes. And there is a scorecard. Look at your hands. Your past life experiences are carved into the lines of your hands. That’s how palm readers are able to spot people who are old souls with great wisdom and experience. Merit is also accumulated and rewarded accordingly. If you do good in this lifetime, you are rewarded with better personal qualities or circumstances in your next lifetime. This is what Buddhists call Karma; Christians say ‘You reap what you sow’.

Some of us are here to teach, some are here to express through music, some are here to make technological or scientific breakthroughs; some are here to learn the basic lessons like kindness and compassion. (Actually I would consider that an advanced lesson, but I don’t know how the Universe organises its curriculum.) Whatever your situation is now, know that you have a role to play in this lifetime. It may be a life of suffering because one may have done evil in the past, or it may be a life to enjoy as a reward for past good deeds, or it could be a standard lesson in patience, persistence, self-confidence, or a million other qualities.

What I’m telling you takes a leap of faith to believe in. That’s why many educated people would simply dismiss it as hogwash. But the foundation of my happiness lies in knowing that there is a greater purpose and system to life than just the one I’m living. With this understanding, I see obstacles not as problems, but as challenges to overcome. Pain and suffering not as bad luck, but as part of a lesson to be learned. Let me give you an example: Imagine in a past life you were a wealthy land owner who scalded a woman’s face with boiling water because she wouldn’t marry you. Then in this lifetime, you are born as a woman with facial deformity. The Universe wants you to learn the pain caused to the scalded woman who rejected you, by putting you in a role where you directly experience every emotion – depression, fear, rejection – in the hope that you will understand the pain caused to others and perhaps become a more understanding, kind, and compassionate soul.

Action Plan
Psychological studies show that religion is a happiness booster. So for this week, if you are agnostic, I invite you to look around at the different religions and explore their literature, practices, and philosophy. You’ll probably find one you feel that speaks to your heart. If you already have a religion you like, I invite you to delve deeper into the spiritual knowledge – read the books, talk to the spiritual teachers, visit the temples, monasteries, synagogues, churches, or mosques. There is great spiritual power flowing through these places. Spending some time there will be good for your soul. You will see that it enhances your clarity and gives you renewed strength.
