When you look in the mirror, do you see The Batman or The Penguin?
Most people see their belly fat overflowing – heavier and more rotund like The Penguin rather than the V-shaped Batman.
Do you know there is this medical condition in society known as diabesity? That is the short word for diabetes and obesity combined.
“What is diabesity? How does it make me into The Penguin?”
Diabesity is basically sugar overload making you obese. If you love cakes, chocolates, cookies, juices, sodas, mocktails… basically everything sweet has the power to trigger the release of insulin which will make you fat.
“How does that work?”
Sugar consumption triggers insulin release by the pancreas. The body uses insulin to clear the sugar from the blood and store the energy in your cells. (Making you fat.)
Insulin is required to transfer the glucose in your blood into the body cells. In other words, insulin causes your body to uptake heavily upon your food and perform fat storage.
If too much sugar (glucose) accumulates in your bloodstream due to inadequate insulin, you will get diabetes, which can lead to a myriad of health problems.
So on one hand, you want lower insulin levels so your body does not store so much fat. But then you are afraid insufficient insulin will lead to excessive sugar in your blood which will cause diabetes. So what to do?
The Answer: Don’t eat sugar. Reduce sugar consumption. Resist the craving for sweetness.
Less Sugar = Less Insulin = Less Uptake = Less Belly Fat
“What does this mean? I cannot enjoy my soda?!”
It means you must be scientific about your body management. It’s very clear in Dr Mark Hyman’s book – The Blood Sugar Solution – that sugared drinks are the leading cause of obesity. But as I read further into his book, I conclude that it is practically consuming anything sweet that will trigger insulin that uptakes heavily from food and does super fat storage.
“So if I eat sugar, I will trigger the fat storage…”
YES, EXACTLY.
If you eat normal meals without sugar or sweet drinks, your insulin won’t spike and fat storage from food will be less.
And if you store less fat and you burn more fat by exercise… guess what? You’ll be slim!
So… you do need to sacrifice to be slim – all that craving for sugar. Note: You can drink sugarless iced fragrant tea to substitute the desire to take sugared drinks. Use the enjoyment of the water fragrance of tea to substitute the taste for sugar.
If you must eat anything sweet, try to do so on an empty stomach and don’t load so much food along with the sweet stuff. Know the science: eating sugar will trigger the insulin response which will cause great uptake of glucose into your body cells. But if you only eat a little bit of sugar as a treat on an empty stomach, even though insulin response is activated, there is still not much food to draw upon. So you won’t get fat! 😀 (Insulin response will fade in 2 – 3 hours after sugar consumption.)
Consuming even a bit of sugar can be addictive. And it can make you hungrier. Another thing to note is that insulin puts your body into fat storage mode. But if you want to stay in burning mode – converting fats into restorative energy (fat oxidation) all day long, then avoid sugar at mealtimes!
Finally, if you do avoid consuming sweet drinks and desserts (anything sugared) with your meals, you will find you have higher energy levels after your meals. This is because not consuming sugar means more stable levels of insulin, which won’t give you a sugar crash after meals – where your blood glucose is super drawn into the body cells, leaving your blood with not enough glucose, so you feel fatigued and sluggish after sweetened meals and sweet drinks.
Dr Mark Hyman has a 10-Day Detox Diet in his book – The Blood Sugar Solution – that teaches you how to lose up to 10 lbs in 10 days.
I tried it for 3 days… I could see my huge round belly shrinking over a few nights! It shrank about 30% already. So I’m waiting to finish the whole program.
Takes a bit of discipline… but very impressive science of weight loss. Check it out!

What To Do If You’re Thin Or Hungry For Calories?
This is the reverse situation, where you are not too fat, but too thin. In this case, take a sweet drink or anything sugared with every meal. This will boost your calorie uptake, by triggering insulin with sugar, causing your body to super draw upon its food. That will really help you get the most out of your food.
How To Save Money On Meals
If you use this knowledge strategically, you can even eat smaller meals like just half a sandwich and take a sweet drink to cause super absorption. You can eat two meals (the other half of the sandwich later) for the price one small meal.
Where To Get Cheap Sweet Drinks?
The cheapest sweet drinks are the cordials you mix with water. In Singapore’s NTUC Supermarket, a big bottle of cordial costs $2.50 SGD, and that is the same price as one can of Coke, but it can mix many cups of sweet drink.
